Not many of you kind listeners to Eardrum Buzz Radio know this, but my favorite band is a trio from Canada named Rush. Really, Prog Rock? I do choose to play everything but “Classic Rock” on my station because I believe there are plenty more other sources of that sound. You know, all the music you heard during the 70’s, if you were alive, or all that your parents or grandparents grew up hearing on the radio, stations like KMET and KLOS here in the Los Angeles area. I do play some Psychedelic Rock though. So why Rush? Well, they were literate, they were challenging, they did have some shorter, catchier songs like Fly By Night early on, but it was the mystery, the fantasy, the many parts and passages to their songs that really caught my ear. Even in shorter songs like those heard on the first side of Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures, when they decided to focus on shorter, radio-friendly tunes, had so much going on within their framework. Then Geddy Lee REALLY got into synthesizers as the main instrument on a few albums, but even those had their hits and memorable songs. They then went back into making more rocking songs, then took a hiatus and came back harder than ever. During their reunion tour I got to take pictures from the stage at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater and got to see Jack Black jump on stage dressed as Carmen Miranda, complete with fruit hat and cropped top, change his clothes, which were in one of the moving clothes driers on stage, then roll around and prostrate himself at the feet of Geddy, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart.
When Rush called it quits after their 2016 tour I was sad but satisfied. When Neil passed in 2020 I was sad. But I started an online radio station and discover so much great music. Then Geddy and Alex had some news. They were playing with a drummer and planned on taking to the road as Rush! Anika Niles was someone I’d never heard of before but seeing and hearing her take on the role of the Professor behind the kit must’ve been a daunting challenge. But she was amazing, muscular and played all the necessary parts while adding her own power and style to the well-known, beloved songs. Loren Gold, who has played with The Who and Chicago, added understated keyboards that filled in the space between bass and guitar beautifully. The back of the stage was a wall-to-wall screen, with another screen in front and above that showed closeups, as well as two side screens with closeups and sometimes a framed closeup in the middle of the graphics on the big screen. The pyro blast during one of the songs made us jump! Geddy was in great voice, he must’ve had some training exercises to hit those high notes, his bass playing was stellar and Alex was as fast and as emotional in his playing as ever. I sang along to quite a few songs, likely off-key, tears flowed, cheers were given and “Hey’s” were yelled at the proper parts during 2112. Rush did mix up some of the songs from their previous night, including beginning their second set with more parts from 2112. I’m exhausted, happily, with lights and colors and riffs in my head. If and when Rush come back, my friend Mike and I will be there. Oh, yeah, the cartoons and videos before and between were hilarious too. “Slappin’ Da Bass.”
